Roots & Shoots

We are excited to introduce Roots & Shoots, a new early childhood program led by our newest faculty member, Hannah Adams. This program is designed for children walking to age 3, accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Roots & Shoots offers a gentle introduction to the rhythms of Waldorf education, providing a nurturing environment for children and caregivers to connect with nature, explore early childhood development, and build a supportive community.

Roots & Shoots is more than just an early childhood program—it's a heartfelt invitation for families to embark on a journey that intertwines education, nature, and community. Offering a gentle introduction to the rhythms of Waldorf education, Roots & Shoots provides a nurturing environment where young children and their caregivers can grow together, forming connections that extend far beyond the classroom.

At the heart of Roots & Shoots is the belief that early childhood is a sacred time for laying the foundation of a child’s lifelong relationship with the world. We aim to foster a deep and lasting connection to nature, understanding that these early experiences in natural settings play a pivotal role in shaping a child's sense of wonder, curiosity, and respect for the environment.

Through a curriculum rich in seasonal rhythms, stories, and songs, we introduce children to the cyclical nature of life, helping them to develop a profound understanding and appreciation of the natural world. Whether in our cozy indoor spaces or out in the expanses of Seward Park, each activity is designed to align with the Waldorf principles of holistic development, nurturing the body, mind, and spirit of each child.

Creating Community

Community lies at the core of Roots & Shoots. We recognize that early childhood education is not just about the individual child but also about the caregivers and families who support them. Our program is designed to be a shared experience, where families come together in a supportive environment, creating bonds that can last a lifetime. As parents and caregivers participate in the rhythms of the program, they too connect with the natural world, finding joy and solace in the simple, yet profound, act of being in nature with their children.

The intimate class size, with a maximum of 10 families per session, ensures that each family feels seen, heard, and valued. This close-knit setting fosters deep connections among participants, creating a village-like atmosphere where everyone plays a part in each other's growth and well-being. In this community, children learn the importance of empathy, cooperation, and respect—values that will serve them throughout their lives.

A Lasting Connection to the Natural World

Roots & Shoots is dedicated to fostering a deep, lasting relationship between young children and the natural world. Through outdoor exploration and nature-based activities, children learn to observe, interact with, and care for their environment. These formative experiences cultivate a sense of stewardship, as children who connect with nature are more likely to grow into adults who protect and cherish the earth.

Whether participating in our structured indoor/outdoor classes or fully immersive outdoor-only sessions, each moment in nature deepens a child's connection to the world around them. They come to appreciate the simple beauty of a falling leaf, the sound of the wind, or the warmth of the sun, all while developing essential physical and cognitive skills
